Why this matters
Keeping children safe in all educational settings
Whether you run a school, a madrasah, a supplementary education centre or any out-of-school setting — compliance with safeguarding and child protection guidance is not optional. It is a legal and moral obligation.
Important — all out-of-school settings must comply
Out-of-school settings including madrasahs, tuition centres, sports clubs, arts groups and supplementary schools are legally required to have appropriate safeguarding policies and procedures in place. Compliance checklist
Key areas every out-of-school setting must address
Use this summary checklist to verify your setting is compliant across all key areas before downloading the full guidance documents above.
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
Every setting must have a named DSL who has received appropriate training and whose details are known to all staff and displayed prominently.
Written Safeguarding Policy
A comprehensive, up-to-date safeguarding and child protection policy reviewed at least annually and shared with all staff, volunteers and parents.
DBS Checks for All Staff and Volunteers
Every adult working with children must have a current enhanced DBS check. Records must be maintained and checked regularly.
Safe Recruitment Procedures
All staff and volunteers must be recruited through a safe recruitment process including application, interview, references and DBS check before starting work with children.
Staff Safeguarding Training
All staff must receive regular safeguarding training. DSLs require specialist training. Records of all training must be maintained and training refreshed at least every two years.
Clear Reporting Procedures
All staff must know exactly what to do if they have a concern about a child. Reporting procedures must be written, accessible and practised regularly.
Suitable Premises and Supervision Ratios
The physical environment must be safe and appropriate for children. Supervision ratios must meet requirements and be maintained at all times during sessions.
Parental Communication and Consent
Parents must be informed of all safeguarding policies and procedures. Appropriate consents must be obtained and maintained for all children attending the setting.
